Last time I did a T5-> T3 transit, I got caught because all I had was my PNR - and got sent back to the BA desk who were able to print out my itinerary, because the BAA lady would not let me go to the bus without some evidence that I was going onward. BA had not been able to issue a CX BP, and I was travelling without a copy of my itinerary because I knew my PNR. So there are checks sometimes. I was fine doing the reverse on the return though.
Was this perhaps Domestic T5 to T3? That is different, since there is a check on the double glass door to see if you can go that particular direction (there is also a check Domestic T5 to International T5 of course). If you were International T5 I can't see it happening, or in the other combinations mentioned.
