You don't need to show any travel document to board the transfer bus (makes sense since many people won't have a boarding card yet), and you are dropped at an area where you can go either way to transits or arrivals. Then you go through immigration and customs as you would if you had arrived at T5.

Yes I've done this too, there are no checks on whether you have an onwards connection. Doesn't work if you have luggage you need to pick up in T1/3/4, obviously. If you live near the M25 corridor it makes a lot of sense to do this, though probably not at 7.30 am when the UK Border is busy.
Actually, be warned. Last time I did a T5-> T3 transit, I got caught because all I had was my PNR - and got sent back to the BA desk who were able to print out my itinerary, because the BAA lady would not let me go to the bus without some evidence that I was going onward. BA had not been able to issue a CX BP, and I was travelling without a copy of my itinerary because I knew my PNR. So there are checks sometimes. I was fine doing the reverse on the return though.
