On OP's question, isn't there a theoretical risk that airline could unilaterally cancel one of the two reservations if they find a passenger is booked twice on the same flight? I remember reading about this a few times although I'm unaware of the details.
I understand that BA's policy is that if the pax has status they will attempt to contact him or his TA before cancelling the booking.
