As others have said, the cameras are pretty similar these days other than at the top end which is probably not where you are going.

When I bought some years ago it came down to lenses. At the time Nikon had a nice 18-200mm zoom (since my camera has a cropped sensor this effectively 28-300mm) and the only thing close that Canon offered was much heavier and I really disliked.

It's nice for distance but it's not the fastest of lenses (with that sort of zoom there's no way it could be) and not exactly a prime choice for action. Since I don't care about action I find it nearly ideal, the one lens covers everything I do so I don't need to change lenses which also means there's no issue of dirt getting inside--the lens has never been off since the day I bought it.
