Seems just about plausible if he meant check in under both tickets, hand over his economy boarding pass and ticket coupon when boarding, but present the first boarding pass stub to the cabin crew at the plane door (secreteing the ticket coupon somewhere) and take the first seat. He would then get offloaded from his first seat as a no-show and later have the coupon refunded. But it would delay the flight and if they ever looked for him physically on board then he would surely be found out.
