You are lucky in that you don't already have a huge fixation on one camera brand or another. I think most people stick with what has worked well for them and what they know (and already may have an investment of equipment in) and that significantly adds to the brand of choice for people.
You can't go wrong with either brand. You need to go to a good camera shop that will let you handle the ones you are looking at, and see what fits you best. Even better, if you have the ability, rent one for a day or two and give it a test run.
It's not just the brand, each camera will have controls in slightly different places, feel and balance differently, etc. Assuming this is going to be an investment for five or ten years or more, you probably want to take the time handling them before to see which fits you best.
