Actually, my observation of the American system is that one generally walks past a desk immediately before the jetbridge, and someone shouts at you: "COLLECT YOUR DUTY FREE PURCHASES HERE. DUTY FREE. DUTY FREE. COLLECT YOUR DUTY FREE. LET US SHOUT AT YOU ONE MORE TIME TO REMIND YOU YOU'RE IN AN AMERICAN AIRPORT. DUTY FREE".
But back on topic ... no. They give you your purchase at the store and you carry it onto the plane. End of.
