Will there be passport control in MUC but no need to collect bags? I've been told that once in MUC we'll feel as if we are walking to Budapest.
I booked nice, comfy, cozy economy seating.

I'm just a sliver UA flyer with hopes of being someone cool someday.
One more question:
Other travel boards recommend no checked luggage....While I'm sure I can pack that light and bring all I need on a carry-on, I don't think I want to. We'll be visiting family in Hungary and Germany and want to bring gifts for everyone. We'll do the same for family here in the States on our return. Is it really a big deal to check a bag?
You'll go through passport control in MUC since you'll be entering the Schengen Zone there. Flying MUC to BUD will be like flying a domestic flight. Note, however, that the United flights are usually parked on the far end of the terminal. Walking from the flight to passport control can be a death march with jetlag. I believe you'll clear a metal detector after passport control. Definitely check out one of the LH lounges if you're flying in Business or will have *G status by then.
Don't worry about checking the bag. I've checked many bags UA-LH and have never had a problem. Just note that LH agents are a bit by-the-bookish when it comes to weighing of luggage at check-in. So, be mindful of the weight of your checked luggage on your return.
