* cables for iPhone, Blackberry, and occasionally the devices themselves
* headphones (in a hard case), earbuds, and a Kindle
* a small amount of clothing (can be rolled), such as 1-2 t-shirts, underwear, socks, perhaps 1 long-sleeved shirt
* Garmin Forerunner, as well as the charger, and USB
* toiletries
* snacks
* any work files, trip files, bus cards, etc
I carry a similar load in my backpack but my 2 computers are 17 and 13 inch... I recently got a High Sierra Swerve (around $45) and am extremely happy with it after 24 fight legs. And if push comes to shove, it fits under the seat, unless it is an aisle with A/V and power. Good material (they are using some 1000 D and lighter material) and good craftmanship. It is not a Red Oxx or Tom Bihn bag, but it does not cost like one either.

Used to have a Swissgear. The strap came undone in a month. Never again.

If you are looking for something that could be used for more stuff, since you are willing to spend $300ish, I would go with a Red Oxx Skytrain, and couple of sleeves for the computers
