I've never heard of that kind of grilling before they let you close an account; it would be funny if the rep didn't believe it was you so wouldn't let the purchase go through, but would have let you close the account anyway.
I would have told them to forget about it if they asked me to tell them my SSN and other sensitive information in earshot of store employees and other customers.
