For the shareholders outside the unions, this should be about building a profitable airline. US' debt load and the payoffs to unions, which will negate the gains from bankruptcy, are absolute poision for the airline if there was a merger.
Between Parker's ego and power trip, more of a crusade, and the unions hate campaign, they might strongarm a merger that will cause AA to crash and burn like EA.
The unions seem to be taking a Twinkie attitude to all of this.

When EA failed the workforce disbanded to other airlines, other travel related companies and completely out of the industry. South Florida is filled with small businesses started by ex-EA employees.
There is a significant faction of AA workers who are completely done with current AA management based on the past 10 years of concessions without solving the problems while management still gained bonuses and grew in size.
This isn't about your upgrade percentage. @:-)
