Duplex on the 20th & 21st floor
My wife and I stayed at the Duplex Suite at the Grand Hyatt Singapore. These are the suites located in the Front Grand Tower. It was one of our favorite rooms and we have been in several suites at that level across Hyatt properties (Park Hyatt Buenos Aires, Park Hyatt Sydney, Grand Hyatt Hong Kong, etc.)
I would have to say the "loft" aspect of the Duplex Suite is very cool. There's two bathrooms (one on the 20th and one on the 21st). The living room and dining table are on the 20th floor and the bedroom loft is on the 21st. The living room was very spacious with a sectional sofa. The dining table was great for dinners or work meetings. There is a kitchenette on the 20th and a small nook for a work desk.
On the 21st floor, there's a small powder room that my wife used. I never went in, but it was great to have a small corner of the room for her.
It's very close to the "Corporate Suites" available in the hotel, but the duplex/loft aspect made it a very cozy home feeling. Also, we could leave the room either on the 20th or 21st floor. This was a great way of dropping our bags at the end of the day in the room and then heading up to the lounge via our internal staircase to the 21st floor.
Here's what you need to know.
- There are actually just 4 of these duplex suites in the hotel. One of the suite is "permanently" occupied by a VIP who pretty much has been living at the property for a long time. I'm not sure if this is the same person that has been living at the hotel for over a decade! (I found this tidbit out when I asked who was the longest stay there...I'd had stayed at the hotel for over 90 nights by September and thought I must have made some type of record...I was wrong. Someone has me beat by a decade!) Anyway, if you want to stay in a Duplex...book early.
- Stay longer. We stayed at the Duplex for 14 nights. It really was great to have this "home away from home" suite and had we stayed only 4 nights, maybe it wouldn't have been as magical. For 4 nights, maybe just settle for the Corporate Suite.
- There are even better rooms. We were planning for a large family event to host some of our family and we asked the concierge to show us some of the suites in the back tower. Those suites are amazing. These were seriously palatial and had huge everything. I definitely wouldn't mind staying in these suites if I plan to use them as a place to hold business meetings, discussions, etc. They are really impressive.
Since there will be renovations, here are some small remarks on what I didn't like about the Duplex Suite.
- The furniture and electronics look dated. The furniture definitely looked like it had been through a decade or two of wear-and-tear. The designs are south-east Asian, but a bit tacky. The electronics (refrigerator), TV, and stereo were appalling. I have to give them credit that the stereo was Bang & Olufsen (B&O), but it was from 1992. I know because this was the one I had from 1992! It's about catching up with the times and having an iPhone connector! (The Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong had the BeoPlay A8...maybe Grand Hyatt can get the new BeoPlay A9)
- The floors were "uneven" on the 20th and 21st floor. That was weird to have uneven floors in a suite...a bit nerve-wracking, especially on the 21st floor.
- Not enough wardrobes and dressers. This was the weirdest thing about my stay. There wasn't a single clothes dresser. I can hang my suits and shirts, but what do I do about my undergarments, t-shirts, and casual wear? There wasn't any dresser to put them in on either floor. There certainly wasn't a shortage of space, but I just found it weird that for a suite, there wasn't anything to put one's underwear in! I found this to be unacceptable especially when you're paying USD 800 a night!
All that said, I still would stay at the Duplex Suite again. Hopefully, the renovation will improve on the suites and make them even better for the future.
