Indeed, much of Japan still carries wads of bills.
In Fukuoka, an elderly resident invited me to eat sushi, and then took me to a "スナック" (a snack bar of sorts, where you are supposed to drink and chat up bar women). At one point, we went into a karaoke place where he asked the owner about a particular song. They didn't have it, so he left a tip/sorry to inconvenience you amount of ¥7000.
The whole experience was certainly an 一期一会 occasion.
