Actually Cathay Boy is correct - no one really should pack their jackets (in the OP's case) or necessities (in others' cases) in checked baggage. In fact, a lot of FTer avoid checking baggage for the purpose of avoiding delayed/lost baggage.

Also - I wonder, what kind of necessities do you think is too big for carry-on baggage?

In OP's case, AFAIK, CX F must have a closet for jackets or big coats...
