Of course an airline can charge what it wants, but surely not so outrageously more than other main competitors. No wonder they are not making any money.
Well, just take the sane approach and book one of the other carriers. QF seems to have an inflated view of itself and seems to often (ime) ex EU have higher fares for a lower quality
looking on Expert Flyer, QF only seems to be offering a full business class fare which is around GBP6000. If comparing full fare on Qantas against the others, there is probably similarity; fortunately the competition is offering one way fares at prices lower than the full fare . looking at EF, QF's J fare is actually higher than the YY unrestricted business class fare which is valid on nearly all carriers and is a lot more flexible
If paying for one way fares, might be worth looking at 1st class fares too. EY is offering GBP3600 plus tax and Emirates at GBP3800 plus tax
If you don't mind an extra leg , you can get business class one way ex AMS for under GBP2000 on EY and QF. just buy a ticket LHR-AMS which will prob cost less than the UK Departure tax which you will save
