For one, as pointed out already, it is extremely naive to think that they could compile all of the data, send the request to whoever makes the cards, have them all printed, stuffed into envelopes with the appropriate materials, and mailed all in a day (or even a week).

Second, even waiting until Jan. 2 would not be enough, as flights on Dec. 31, may take a few days to post. Especially for partner flights, those may take a week or more.

IIRC they actually sent out cards early to anyone who requalified for the same status level as the previous year. Then they sent out the rest, including those who qualified for a higher status level in the meantime, later.
