You might also want to contemplate HIJ-HND-SFO-YVR. SFO-YVR is actually SFO-SEA-YVR, but the connection works, and I almost consider this annoyance preferable to the cross town shuffle in Tokyo.
OK, this is actually more of a product of my rather convoluted travel plan. What I'm actually doing is SHA-HND on NH (using *A miles), then a trip overland from there to HIJ with some people I know, then the segments I mentioned, then YVR-SEA-MSO (for school- three years in a Chinese university trying to get a full EE degree in Chinese has taught me that I need to go back and do it in a language I fully understand before I end up with a near-zero GPA). But I don't get the free stopover in YVR (need to leave after school cancels my Chinese student visa, can't stay longer in Japan due to cost, but can't arrive in MSO before the dorms open, so staying in YVR with relatives) if I do HND-SFO-YVR, which means another 12.5k miles.
...It seemed a lot clearer in my head.
