I have had great success maxing out MR's as a result of schedule changes! The most outrageous is a MR to TUS which I finessed into 2 nights in SFO over President's Day weekend!
On a recent call to UA, I was advised of a "policy change". Agents are evidently being told to only accommodate change requests which are +/- 4 hours (it used to be 2?). fyi, I have succeeded in requesting changes on schedule changes of less than 30 minutes!
Also, does UA ever pay where a schedule change requires an overnight in a location not on original itinerary? Success stories?
Is that +/- 4 hour schedule change requirement consistent with the contract of carriage. If, for example, they advise that they will get you to your destination, but 3 hours later than originally scheduled, or you obliged to go along with that change rather than be accommodated in some way? If you wanted to nix the whole thing, couldn't you simply demand a refund?
