I received this kind of message from the Melbourne Marriott about a week before I was due to arrive - the only one I can ever remember getting. The day prior to check-in - a Sunday, they emailed the name of the Manager who'd be on duty that day, etc. Also got a thank you letter following our stay. I was so impressed, I called Mr. Marriott's number to pass on my compliments.
If you are referring to the Marriott in Melbourne, Australia, I can also attest to their excellent customer service. When I stayed there, I received a "hand-written" welcome card (instead of the generic computer generated form letter) from both the General Manager and the Front Desk Manager, along with a box of chocolate.
