Better yet: choose a bulkhead seat (at least on narrowbody domestics where it is the biggest issue). That way, you are guaranteed the ability to put both in the overhead bins.

Very important to board at the earliest possible time to stow your bags quickly so you won't have to swim upstream at the end of the flight.
