Giving complimentary domestic upgrades by elite status and then fare class I would agree on, even though it would not benefit me. If there are two EXPs and one paid $129 to fly JFK/LAX and the other paid $800 I've never understood why the $129 EXP gets the upgrade.
Even odder is the case where they are selling business class seats at 3k, and economy at 300 but have C class available. You can just buy the miles and pay the co-pay for way less than the cost of J. It would seem to be much more beneficial to save the C inventory for SWUs, and sell the miles+copay on date of departure.
