I'm pretty sure about the answer to the first question (which should be possible), but definitely unsure about the second question.
Oddly, despite flying F, only that sector has 'gratis' advance seat selection from booking (outwith 1A/K). Any connecting flights are subject to the normal rules, which would be general seat selection available at T-24hr.
