Following the recent cartel-related chaos in Puerto Vallarta (attempted hand grenade assassination on the new police chief of PV, who resigned a few days later; etc.), it appears that the Mexican drug cartels are on the brink of war in these historically safe areas in western Mexico. From reading on various non-travel, non-realty forums, the cartels have been present in PV and PM for a long time (El Chapo territories ... the most well-known drug lord in the country) and thus some inherent safety has been afforded to the areas for vacation purposes (for tourists and cartel members alike). It appears that the Zeta cartel has since moved into the area (north and south) over the last couple years and therein lies the issue that is seemingly about to erupt in these protected areas.
We were planning to take our anniversary trip to PM this upcoming May. Based on news from the past 2-3 months, I'm not really sure if that is a safe option these days (despite the recent U.S. State Department advisory suggesting it was perfectly safe).
This is an interesting forum topic following the attack on the PV police chief two months ago.

That definitely doesn't make me feel cozy and safe...
Any news from people who know about this destination as of late 2012 (unfortunately, information prior to 'current' is already outdated)? Thoughts on safety, etc.?
