Hmm... Wonder if you could flog the unused LHR-Nottingham bit to someone waiting at LHR headed for Nottingham, that could recoup some or indeed all of the fare you paid (since you'll only have used the LGW-LHR bit)
PS I know it (probably) doesn't work like that, but it's a nice thought, no?
