We did not find the area to be unbearably hot and humid when visiting in early-January. However we were unable to go to the reef due to recent cyclones that had reduced the visibility below the surface So if you only have a short time frame check the weather first and consider your alternatives. We ended up diverting to the Hyatt Resort on the Sunshine Coast where we enjoyed a couple of the most relaxing nights on the trip.
