I think you need to choose one of the "choice essential" or " choice plus" to get the free change fee. It was $68 more for my dummy booking. acceptable.
IMHO, AA has not had much luck with these quippy monikers of late. Preferred vs. Preferred Plus created confusion and eventually had to be replaced. I'm not sure what is to be gained by "choice essential" vs. "choice plus" as marketing terms.
