I've exchanged (English language) books at hotels and coffee places around the world, including mainland China. I hate the idea of throwing a book into the trash, so I'll sometimes irrationally carry it with me until I can find a good home for the book where it will probably be picked up by someone who wants to read it.

However, for magazines, I tend to toss them as I go, even though they can be more expensive than paperback books.
