Thanks for the feedback everyone. I had to go with a hybrid UA/AA ticket booked through Orbitz. When I tried to book them separately, AA.com had it more expensive one way than Orbitz did. Strange.

I could still have flown DL but the latest departure meant an early stop at my client site and they wouldn't have liked that.
