I can usually book far enough ahead on a Latitude flight pass to confirm an upgrade although sometimes it means booking a flight other than my first choice. You are proof that ACs strategy is working, so why should they change it?
They are getting you to book latitude or Z instead of T+ and upgrading, unless it is so wide open that they actually open some R space.
