You are worrying way too much about this whole experience. This is HND, not like doing an international to domestic transfer at BOM or something...

Once again, having done something very similar on NH, barring some unforeseen circumstances, NH will issue you your HND - ITM boarding pass at LAX, assuming you are on NH or one of her subsidiaries...
Either way, I know I have to recheck bags, so at some point I really, really would like a transfer desk.
Why? The connecting counter is your transfer desk. The difference between HND and some other airports is that it is landside, not airside. If you've ever done an international to domestic at, say, LAX, it's pretty much the same procedure.
Same day as what, they're not clear. If they mean, the same day as the international flight departs, that is impossible as of course one crosses the date line coming from the US.
From US to Japan: your bag will be checked LAX - HND, pick it up at HND and post customs, drop it off at the connecting counter at the international terminal.
From Japan to US: your bag will be checked in at your point of departure and you won't see it until you get to the US, as long as your connection in HND is 24 hours or less. If you are doing ITM - HND - LAX as a return, even though your ITM - HND flight is technically the day before your HND - LAX flight (due to the scheduling of NH 1006), what I described in the prior sentence will still happen.
