I do. I do travel internationally without printouts of ticket receipts a lot of days of the year and have done so without them for most of my international travel for at least a decade.
I don't even have printouts of most of my ticketed itineraries from the TA and/or airlines.
As my grandfather used to say, keeping notes on paper is a crutch that makes for a more feeble mind -- and his memory capacity was far better than mine.

I do keep digital photographs/scans (of ticket numbers, pnrs and flight info) on an electronic device which I don't value a lot and am willing to show to officials as and when I deem useful.
What the OP experienced doesn't sound any worse than what Australia once did to me too. They even stamped me into the country before a group of them escorted me to the transit security and sent me off to shop and lounge around airside. At least the OP got landside this trip.
