They can't change your price after you book, whether you use cash or points. However, if you make any changes after your status ends (if there is still availability for your room type), the point price will change.
It's like booking during a sale and then making changes after the sale ends. You will have to pay for difference in the 2 prices when you make the change.
However, your status at CHECK-IN determines your benefits. No status at check-in=no benefits.
