If she wants to do this anyway, I don't see why a friend would have to call and say she's delayed. She could just call the hotel herself and say that she booked the room for this purpose, and to not cancel the remainder of her reservation.
She's not willing to run the risk that her room isn't ready because of her schedule for the day.

Based on my personal experience, I'd say letting the hotel know in advance that you're not arriving until morning can cost you a room if the hotel has a walk-in customer that promises to leave early (and then didn't).

I agree that it seems like a waste of money, but then it's not my money so that isn't my problem.
