Definitely doable - I know I would go for the 2 hour connection personally but I've also been through BKK airport a fair few times so I know where I'm going.
No reason you couldn't ask the check-in agent assuming you made it in time to see if they can get you on the earlier flight though if you took the 4h20 connection. Not saying they would do it, but I know I would at least ask if it were me.
If he's flying without checked bags, I'm not sure why he'd need to go through Thai immigration in Bangkok. He should be able to stay airside and get to the Transfer Desk to get a PG boarding pass, then head to lounge or to boarding gate, right?
I agree that 2 hours for a connection should be doable. The problem is that if that incoming is delayed by 45 minutes or more for any reason, the connection will likely go pear-shaped. But I'd buy into your strategy of booking the 4h20, then if time ends up on his side, asking PG if there's any space available to go on the earlier flight. Can't hurt to try.
