As a retailer, I disagree AMEX fees are necessarily higher.

We accept all three cards. While Visa and Mastercard do have some lower fee options, they actually charge higher fees for certain higher end cards. In many cases, the Visa and Mastercard fees are higher than AMEX.

It is also my experience that AMEX pays faster. But YMMV.
