IST goes up considerably in your time frame. I'm seeing outbound on 12/29 returning 12/31 on UA/LH for $1,282.70 as the cheapest then with a one-night stay. That's 11,231 miles. If you can't get to NYC by Dec 12th to do a same-day turn for $450 to HNL, perhaps two trips to IST or an accellerator might work out best.
