Yes, there are different taxes in different localities in the US but, for the most part, we are talking about hotel taxes and fees. Those taxes and fees are based on the location of the hotel, which does not change [very often]. Therefore, it should be quite possible for the hotel and it advertising partners to show the proper 'all-in' price for the property in question.
I actually do prefer that the taxes are listed separately. The total is listed right nearby anyways so its not very hard to find. I find that I prefer to know how much tax I am paying and prefer to know which cities and states are gouging travelers. Plus if it were hidden there would probably be more incentive to raise taxes.
Also as Americans we are very used to thinking in terms of prices being plus tax. Its expected. Probably we would tend to underestimate the cost if taxes were built in.
