Travelling on a 2-4-1 Companion Voucher, the companion can opt to not fly the last leg of the trip (I did this in September). But the converse is not possible --- the companion cannot fly if the holder of the voucher doesn't fly, I believe. (Although I am not sure what they can do if the voucher holder simply doesn't show up for the flight.....)
