Flights in South America to visit Machu Pichu, Iguazu Falls and Rio
We're planning to book two One World Awards in J through QFF for travel in January/February 2014 so will be starting to book flights as soon as they become available from January. We'll be flying from SYD to SCL and after visiting South America we'll travel to New York and on to Europe.
We've booked a 14 night cruise from Buenos Aires that departs on February 2 so will need to be there a couple of days before then.
While in South America we'd like to visit Machu Pichu, Iguazu Falls and Rio De Janeiro in January, before the cruise. I'm planning that our first stop would be Santiago and that we'll fly out from Buenos Aires after the cruise. For flights within South America we'll look at the best options and prices, including buying a LAN South American Airpass. I'm trying to work out the best combination of flights for the best price, which we'll book when we have our award tickets in and out of SA booked.
Looking at flights for January 2013 to give me an idea of possible schedules for January 2014, so far I'm considering, after arriving in SCL from SYD.
SCL-LIM-CUZ (LAN)
CUZ-LIM-SCL / SCL-GIG (LAN)
While we're passing through there we should probably also have a day or two in Lima before flying to Rio.
GIG-IGU (TAM)
IGR-AEP (LAN)
It looks as though the cheapest option will be to fly from Rio to Iguazu Falls (Brazil) and then from Iguazu (Argentina) to Buenos Aires. We would like to spend a day on both the Brazil and Argentina sides of the Falls so I wouldn't expect that flying out of a different airport would be a problem.
Since I've never visited South America I would appreciate some advice from those who know this area well on if this seems to be the best order of flights to visit each of these places or if there is a different order worth considering.
Thanks in advance for any advice and suggestions that you can offer.
