Sounds like AA went above and beyond... I would be glad I wasn't charged for re-booking.

Absolutely correct - and IIRC it's a one time fee that's valid for the life of your passport. If I'm not mistaken, it's also specific to EZE airport.... if you drove or took a bus into Argentina from Brazil, Chile, or Paraguay then the fee doesn't apply.
