Thumbs down Calm Air Calamity

So I'm going to Churchill, Manitoba to view the Northern Lights in February. I no sooner completed my booking on Calm Air which has a monopoly on air travel to Churchill that I got a schedule change notice less than 48 hours later. In the meantime, I booked United for my flights in and out of Winnipeg to meet the Calm Air flight, non-refundable of course. I gave myself an extra day on the outbound portion, figuring the Winnipeg airport hotel cost (exorbitant) was worth the peace of mind to make sure I could make my Calm Air flight the next day at noon since there is no way to combine the tickets or interline my baggage between the two carriers. But on the way back, I decided to avoid repeating the hotel cost since Calm Air's schedule showed them arriving 90 minutes before the United flight to Chicago was due to leave. But the schedule change -- wait for it -- causes me to miss the connection! Calm Air is more than willing to change my flight for no charge, but since it's their earliest of two flights I am on already, the only solution is to come back to Winnipeg a day early and miss one night of my very expensive 5-night Northern Lights program. United wants more the $600, nearly the cost of my entire original multi-city ticket with them, to change the ticket. Anybody see a solution that I am not seeing on this one? No I did not buy trip cancellation insurance. And Calm Air does not return my calls. Being left to the wolves on this one! Beware Calm Air. Misnomer if there ever was one!
