Last time I flew to Jersey, I sat on the left hand side (port) and we came in from the west so nice views of St. Helier, Elizabeth Castle etc.
Time before, sat on the right (starboard) and we came in from the east so views of St Aubin etc.

Random things:
AA SJU-MIA: Left hand side gives nice views of San Juan
AA MCO-JFK: Right hand side has some lovely coastal scenery, cities etc.
AA JFK-LAX: Right hand side gives great views of Manhattan, Staten Island etc.

Places like Heathrow, Gatwick, Washington Dulles etc - doesn't really matter. Mostly non-descript buildings, car parks and roads. You really can't tell one place from another.
That said, the northbound? flights out of Washington Reagan do have the White House etc on the right hand side. Southbound flights don't although you can see the Washington Monument and Capital building from the terminal and left side of the plane when taxiing.
