Indeed, that's what I ended up doing in the end. I did speak with United beforehand and the rep, after checking the flight change charges, told me the same thing: buy one way and don't use the inbound leg on the original ticket.
Still cancel the original ticket. That will give you some residual value that you can possibly use (minus change fee) on future travel rather than having it go completely to waste.
