Yes, your bags can be checked through.

You stay airside. No need to re-clear security at LHR as it's a Domestic feeder so you'll march straight off your EDI flight and after a quick scan of your LHR-FCO BP, head straight for the gate - via the lounge if you are thirsty...

3) Can you actually get between the two terminals and through security in 70min or less? I’m a BA Silver card holder so I can use the fast track security line.
BA1461 lands at T5
BA546 leaves from T5

You won't need to change terminals.

It's a legal connection otherwise BA wouldn't sell it (T5-T5 MCT is 60 mins) so it should be fine.
