Last year I flew from GLA to SYD on BA in F and then picked up a QF Y flight (separate PNR) to MEL. When I was checking in at GLA I asked the check in desk to check my bags through to MEL, which she did without any issue. Although you will have to pick your bags up at SYD and recheck them - the luggage tag that was originally issued in GLA was retained. I had my full BA F luggage allowance, women at Qantas desk in SYD never blinked an eyelid.

Just don't do what I did in a similar situation - When I got to the transfer desk at SYD I ripped off the lugguage tag! I had asked for my flights to be linked, more so for delay protection, but hadn't realised the tag was printed out to BNE. They just reprinted me a new one along with my boarding pass.
