I have twice recently rented Nisson Versas from Hertz with mileage in the 25k+ range. The first of the two rattled and clanged everytime I turned a corner. On the second one the door warning light was on most of the trip. I opened and closed all doors several times on that trip to no avail. A high mileage Toyota beats a lot of other cars any day.
The issue with Toyotas rented by Hertz is that they are stripped down models with no options. While if you get a Chevy it is usually well equipped and much nicer (leather steering wheel versus plastic, leather seats or higher quality cloth, versus cheap cloth, Bluetooth versus no Bluetooth, sat radio vs no sat radio, etc.)
Hertz tends to rent base models rather than well equipped, but their GM cars are an exception. They must have favorable terms to buy better equipped GM cars relative to what they get from Toyota.
The consequence of this is that I now have a favorable opinion of GM, and a poor opinion of Toyota. And I say this as a guy who has only ever bought imports for private use.
