I'm afraid that he did do something wrong.
He tried to use a self service machine in a bank without using a card that belonged to that bank.
These self service machines are becoming increasingly common in city centre bank branches in the UK as well. There are machines where you can check your statement and transfer money etc and also make deposits.
These machines are entirely separate to ATMs and are only for use by bank customers.
