Another option is to fly into Grand Junction which is less than two hours away. It does not close but on very rare occasions.
I agree GJT is an easier airport because of its location when it comes to weather. The drive to Vail is more more manageable than from Denver because its a gradual climb and not having to go throuh mountain passes.
The flip side of flying into a small airport is going to be on rental car costs.
From a hub city like JFK or LAX its not that uncommon to get seasonal direct flights into some of the small ski towns like Vail, Aspen, or Kackson.
Because of winter weather, one thing I also try to do with connections are avoiding the chance of winter delays in places like Chicago.
