double check (especially in Europe) that an ATM is a cash dispensing one
I've used ATM's to get cash hundreds of times, in Europe, with never a problem.
I was in Zurich. Switzerland and used an ATM from the Zurich Kantonal Bank; I put my ATM card in one of their machines, located in a shopping center, but NOT staffed by humans, (and is the case with virtually all such machines in Europe, they pull card into the body of the machine and return it at the end of the transaction)--the terminal I used (as I realized later) was a bank transaction machine for customers of ZKB, but did not dispense cash--it kept my card. I tried contacting ZKB, but all I learned is that they either cut up my card or send it back to my bank (useless conclusion if I needed cash).
