Purchase or Bank/Cash Advance When Buying Foreign Currency? Your Experiences, Please.

Good day,

sorry if this thread duplicates prior posts. I did do a few searches, but only came back with posts about using a cc overseas, the exchange rate when using, forex fees, etc.

If I go to my local Wells Fargo bank I can purchase foreign currency using my credit card (yes, I am aware that there is a fee for this). Since I have several upcoming trips laid out, AND, I prefer having currency available before I depart this seems to me to be a very good possibility to achieve spending requirements when churning/applying for cards with offers of mileage bonuses.

So, here is my question for you.

WHAT HAS YOUR EXPERIENCE BEEN WITH THE VARIOUS CC COMPANIES? Chase, Citi, AMEX, Barclays - when the above type of transaction is processed, does that company record it as a purchase or a cash advance?

Perhaps if they log it as a cash advance, I should purchase some VISA gift cards first and then use the gift cards at the Wells Fargo bank???

TIA,
